NERC Clarifies Free Electricity Meter Program Amid Confusion

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has addressed the confusion surrounding the installation of free electricity meters across Nigeria. Musiliu Oseni, the Chairman of NERC, clarified that the meter supply is part of a World Bank-funded distribution sector recovery program.

Customers are not required to make upfront payments for the meters, and the recovery mechanism does not entail direct charges to customers. Oseni emphasized that although the Distribution Companies (DISCOs) will eventually repay the loans used to procure the meters, it will be done at minimal interest rates.

The tariff structure will not involve direct cash payments from customers. To identify free meters, customers are advised to look for clear inscriptions with the word "free" and the name of the electricity distribution company on the meters.

This clarification aims to prevent customers from being exploited and ensure transparency in the meter distribution process.
