NERC Commences Free Meter Distribution to Enhance Electricity Supply Industry

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has initiated the distribution of free meters to improve the electricity supply industry. Dr.

Musiliu Oseni, the Chairman of NERC, announced this development during the sixth seminar of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) held in Abuja. The distribution of free meters is in line with the commission's commitment to fulfilling promises made by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to increase the number of meters available to customers across the country.

NERC is also engaging in strategic actions such as intensifying oversight, implementing the SCADA project to reduce grid collapses, and creating a regulatory framework to attract private investment in the transmission sector. Additionally, the commission is establishing customer care clinics across Distribution Companies (DISCOs) to enhance service delivery.

The seminar emphasized the importance of decentralizing electricity regulation and introducing new adjudication mechanisms in the sector. Enyinnaya Abaribe, a state lawmaker, highlighted the need for legislative reforms to support the ongoing sector transformation.
