NESG Urges Stronger Climate Action for Economic Growth

The Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG), in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, called for stronger climate action to convert Nigeria’s climate commitments into investments that can drive economic growth, create jobs, and enhance productivity. This call was made during the NESG National Green Growth Dialogue on Thursday, which served as a pre-summit engagement for the 32nd Nigerian Economic Summit (NES#32), themed “From Commitments to Green Growth.” Ms Adesola Olatunde, Chief Scientist representing the Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), stated that green growth is essential for building a resilient economy.
She mentioned Nigeria's Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) 3.0, which aims for a 32% reduction in emissions by 2035, requiring an estimated $337 billion to be mobilized by 2035 for climate and development priorities. Mr Temitope Akinyemi, Special Adviser to the Minister of Finance on Climate Finance, emphasized the need to strengthen climate finance structures to maximize impact.
