Oyetola Advocates Fairness for Developing Nations at MEPC 84

During the 84th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 84) held in London, Adegboyega Oyetola, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, emphasized the need for fairness and equity for developing countries in the global maritime community's efforts to achieve net-zero emissions. He reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to decarbonization, stressing that the framework must reflect the economic realities of developing nations.

Oyetola's statement highlighted the importance of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 while aligning with sustainable development goals. The meeting included strategic discussions with Arsenio Dominguez, the Secretary-General of the IMO, and Fawaz Al Sehali, Saudi Arabia's Transport General Authority head.

Oyetola reiterated Nigeria's commitment to building partnerships within the IMO framework to enhance maritime safety and develop a sustainable blue economy. The Secretary-General expressed appreciation for Nigeria's leadership in enhancing maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea and acknowledged the country's significant progress in reducing piracy.
