New INEC Chairman Pledges to Ensure Elections Decided at Polling Units, Not in Courtrooms

Prof. Joash Amupitan, the newly appointed Chairman of INEC, vows to end the trend of election disputes being settled in courtrooms rather than at polling units.

Speaking at the Nigerian Association of Law Teachers' annual conference in Abuja, he expressed concern over the high number of pre-election cases burdening the country's democratic system. Amupitan highlighted the need for genuine democratic contests decided by the people and called for sustained reforms within political parties and electoral laws.

He urged the National Assembly to strengthen existing electoral laws to promote transparency and public confidence in the electoral process.
