New Zealand Offers Fee-Free Citizenship for Immigrant Children

The New Zealand government has announced that a specific category of individuals, referred to as "immigrant children," can apply for citizenship without incurring any fees, as per the legislation effective in 2026. To qualify, applicants must demonstrate that they were immigrant children and not refugee children, submit their applications personally, and do so after 13 November 1995.

The definition of an immigrant child includes those who arrived in New Zealand from Great Britain between 1 January 1949 and 31 December 1954, under an arrangement with their parents or guardians, as stipulated in Part 1 of the Child Welfare Amendment Act 1948. Notably, individuals who arrived accompanied by a parent or relative do not qualify.

The legislation explicitly excludes refugee children, who came under arrangements with the International Refugee Organisation. Additionally, the rules limit the benefit to one free application per person, meaning those who have previously utilized the waiver cannot apply again without paying the standard fee.
