Onyeabor Calls for Merit-Based Leadership in Nigerian Football

Onyeabor, a former chairman of the Rangers International Enugu Committee on the Setting Up of Feeder Teams, emphasized the need for quality administration in Nigerian football to restore its success. Speaking in Enugu, he noted that the recent poor performances of Nigeria’s football teams led to the resignation of NFF board members.

Onyeabor criticized the Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau-led Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) for lacking managerial acumen and achieving unsatisfactory results. He argued that the selection of new NFF leaders should prioritize merit and competence over ethnicity.

Onyeabor highlighted the importance of assessing candidates based on their track records, mentioning Amobi Ezeaku, the manager of Rangers International, as a capable candidate who has revitalized the club. He urged the National Sports Commission (NSC) to broaden its search for football administrators beyond regional considerations to include qualified individuals from the South-East.
