NGE Condemns NBC's Threats Against Broadcast Presenters

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) expressed serious concern regarding threats from the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to sanction broadcasters for allegedly bullying guests during interviews. In a statement issued on Tuesday, signed by Guild President Ez Anaba and General Secretary Onuoha Ukeh, the NGE described these threats as a direct assault on the principles of press freedom and editorial independence.

The Guild acknowledged the NBC's motivation to promote the profession and uphold ethical standards but criticized the vague wording of the statement, which could lead to misinterpretation and unfair targeting of journalists. The NGE argued that the NBC's approach risks weaponizing the broadcast code, potentially inducing self-censorship among broadcasters and stifling legitimate journalistic inquiry.

The statement emphasized the importance of journalists asking tough questions, especially in the context of the upcoming electoral cycle, to hold power accountable and ensure citizens receive accurate information.
