The Nigerian Exchange closed at 209,317.41 points on Wednesday, with telecom and energy stocks driving gains while industrial and logistics plays retreated. Trading activity remained robust with ₦41.9 billion in value exchanged across 46,231 deals.
Wednesday's session on the NGX painted a picture of selective strength amid profit-taking pressures. The market closed at 209,317.41 points, buoyed by notable double-digit rallies in the telecommunications and upstream energy sectors, though these gains were partially offset by declines in industrial and consumer-facing stocks.
AIRTELAFRI and ARADEL led the charge with matching 10.00% surges, climbing ₦249.70 and ₦127.90 respectively. ETI followed closely with a 9.98% jump of ₦5.05, signaling renewed investor appetite for energy plays. Transport stocks also participated, with TRANSEXPR gaining 9.89%, adding ₦0.45 to close at ₦5.00.
However, momentum faced resistance in other quarters. CONOIL declined 6.80%, losing ₦13.90 as oil-dependent sectors showed volatility. Industrial heavyweights stumbled—JOHNHOLT dropped 9.72% (₦1.40), while AUSTINLAZ fell 9.77%, shedding ₦0.39. CWG retreated 7.22%, losing ₦1.65, reflecting broader weakness in the consumer discretionary space.
Liquidity remained healthy with ₦41.9 billion in trading value. ZENITHBANK dominated volume charts with 73.3 million shares traded, followed by TANTALIZER and UBA, suggesting retail investors remained active despite mixed sentiment.
The market cap settled at ₦134.8 trillion, reflecting the day's modest directional tilt. The apparent sector rotation—from industrial to energy and telecom—warrants monitoring as earnings season implications unfold.
Watch for earnings releases and crude oil price movements in the next session, as these typically dictate capital reallocation patterns.
