NGX Market Wrap May 7, 2026 | Plus234Feed
The Nigerian Exchange closed at 239,596.97 points with mixed sentiment as top gainers posted near-10% rallies while select stocks faced sharp declines. Total market value reached ₦58.8 billion across 1.66 billion shares traded.
The NGX delivered a bifurcated performance on May 7, with sharp gains in select equities offset by notable losses in others, signaling cautious investor positioning ahead of potential macro developments.
Top gainers clustered around the 9.97–9.99% mark, with CAP leading the charge, gaining ₦19.30 to ₦212.50, followed closely by FTNCOCOA (+₦0.73), ZICHIS (+₦2.75), MEYER (+₦1.55), and BERGER (+₦8.95). This synchronized upper-circuit movement across disparate sectors—agriculture, insurance, manufacturing—suggests sector-wide rebalancing or institutional accumulation rather than company-specific catalysts.
Conversely, the losers' side presented steeper declines. UPL and CONHALLPLC both fell 10%, losing ₦0.50 and ₦0.65 respectively, while SKYAVN shed 8.63% (₦12.35), CILEASING dropped 7.84%, and RTBRISCOE fell 7.70%. These declines, particularly SKYAVN's double-digit naira loss, reflect profit-taking or sector-specific headwinds in financial services and aviation stocks.
Trading activity remained robust, with NEM dominating volume at 360 million shares, trailed by FTGINSURE (213 million) and VFDGROUP (141 million). The 72,648 total deals and ₦153.8 trillion market cap underscore sustained institutional participation, though the absence of a clear directional bias suggests investors remain uncertain about near-term momentum.
Watch for whether tomorrow's session sustains the gainers' rally or reverses into the losers' territory, potentially signaling a broader market correction.
