NGX Market Wrap 21-Apr-26 | Plus234Feed
The Nigerian Exchange closed at 218,249.81 points on Tuesday amid a tale of two markets: consumer staples and industrial stocks surged while financial sector heavyweights retreated sharply. Trading activity remained robust with ₦44.86 billion in daily value, though market sentiment fragmented across sectors.
Tuesday's trading session on the NGX revealed a bifurcated market, with bullish momentum in select consumer and industrial names offset by notable weakness in the financial sector.
On the gainers' side, NASCON led with an impressive +10.00% rally, adding ₦15.60 to close at ₦171.60, suggesting renewed appetite for consumer staples. WAPCO followed with +9.64% (+₦24.00 to ₦273.00), while UNIONDICON and UACN posted solid gains of +9.92% and +7.84% respectively. TRANSEXPR rounded out the top five gainers with +8.27%. These moves indicate selective buying in non-financial sectors.
However, financial stocks proved troublesome. ACCESSCORP—despite topping the most-traded list with 110.8 million shares—slumped -8.83%, shedding ₦2.90 to ₦29.95. STANBIC declined -8.96% (₦15.20 to ₦154.50), while FGSUK2031S4 suffered the day's steepest loss at -16.11%, falling ₦15.94 to ₦83.00. FCMB and ZENITHBANK, ranking second and fourth in volume traded, appeared caught in the downdraft affecting their sector peers.
Total volume reached 842.5 million shares across 61,617 deals, maintaining healthy liquidity despite directional confusion. The ₦140.5 trillion market cap reflects the tension between sector-specific strength and broader financial sector headwinds.
Investors should monitor whether tomorrow's session stabilizes financial stocks or if the rotation toward consumer and industrial plays continues unabated.
