The Nigerian Exchange closed marginally higher on Wednesday as the ASI gained 0.11% to settle at 254,574.26 points, with total market value reaching ₦34.37 billion across 28,862 deals. Divergent price action saw energy and technology stocks outperform while consumer-linked sectors faced selling pressure.

The All-Share Index delivered a measured close on Wednesday, advancing just 28 points to 254,574.26 in what proved a mixed session for Nigeria's equity market. Despite the modest headline gain, underlying price action revealed distinct winners and losers as investors reassessed portfolio positioning ahead of the week's close.

The strongest performers emerged from the power and fintech spaces. TRANSPOWER surged 9.97%, adding ₦18.40 to close at ₦203.00, signalling renewed investor appetite for electricity infrastructure plays. Similarly, ETRANZACT (NGX: ETRANZACT) rallied 9.68% to ₦17.00 as digital payment narratives continued gaining traction. CAVERTON followed with a 9.84% jump to ₦3.35, though trading activity remained subdued across most gainers.

Conversely, defensive sectors encountered headwinds. ETERNA (NGX: ETERNA) led declines with a 9.94% drop, losing ₦4.25 to ₦38.50, while SOVRENINS fell 9.91% to ₦1.91. LEARNAFRCA declined 9.84% to ₦8.25, suggesting profit-taking in education and consumer retail segments. CORNERST and MBENEFIT also retreated, shedding 9.30% and 6.85% respectively.

Market breadth favoured gainers over losers, though the 0.11% index advance masks underlying volatility. Total deals reached 28,862 with 462.6 million shares traded, generating ₦34.37 billion in value. Market capitalisation stood at ₦165.29 trillion.

The divergence between sector performers and laggards suggests selective buying rather than broad-based confidence. Watch for volume trends in tomorrow's session to confirm whether Wednesday's gainers sustain momentum or face profit-taking.
