NHRC Demands Justice for Yobe Market Airstrike Victims

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) condemned a deadly airstrike that occurred last Sunday in a civilian market along the Borno-Yobe state border, resulting in the deaths of 56 people and numerous injuries. NHRC's Executive Secretary, Toni Ojukwu, described the incident as a grave violation of human rights and demanded a full account from the authorities responsible for the airstrike.

Ojukwu stressed that while the strike may have been labeled an accident, it does not absolve the state of responsibility. The commission raised serious concerns regarding adherence to military engagement principles, including proportionality and precaution, warning that such incidents erode public trust and weaken the legitimacy of ongoing counter-terrorism operations.

NHRC called for an immediate, independent, and transparent investigation, urging that it not be solely handled by military authorities. They also emphasized the need for comprehensive support for victims, including medical care and compensation, and reiterated the obligation to protect civilians in conflict areas.
