NHRC Seminar Addresses Digital Violence Against Women Lawyers

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) organized a seminar in Abuja on Monday to tackle digital violence against women lawyers. The event aimed to equip participants with knowledge on legal remedies for issues such as cyberbullying and online harassment.

NHRC Executive Secretary Toni Ojukwu and Director of Legal Services Hajiya Rabi Anwar spoke about the rapid technological advancements that expose women to new forms of rights violations in the digital space. Ojukwu noted that female lawyers, judges, law students, and women in public service are increasingly subjected to cyberbullying, cyberstalking, identity theft, and non-consensual sharing of intimate images.

The NHRC stressed its mandate to protect and promote human rights in both physical and digital spaces. Fach Omoya, Chairperson of the Nigerian Bar Association Women Forum, described digital violence as a serious human rights concern that threatens dignity and freedom of expression.

The seminar emphasized the importance of collaboration to protect women's rights in the legal profession.
