NSCDC Operative Killed in Niger Mining Clash

On July 22, 2026, around 2pm, an operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) was killed during a confrontation with suspected illegal miners at a mining site in Korokpa Village, Paikoro LGA, Niger State. The NSCDC Mining Marshal was conducting a routine patrol when they encountered resistance from the miners, who attempted to block the removal of seized mining materials.

Residents described the gunfire as reminiscent of a battlefield. DSC Abubakar Rabiu Muti, the spokesperson for the Niger State Command of the Corps, confirmed that the operatives faced a "coordinated and unprovoked attack." During the incident, one officer was shot in the head and later succumbed to his injuries despite medical efforts.

The NSCDC is collaborating with other security agencies to apprehend those responsible for the attack and has urged residents to provide credible information to aid in combating illegal mining and related criminal activities.
