Nigeria's Power Minister Unveils Grid Stability Plan

Joseph Tegbe, the Minister of Power, outlined a comprehensive roadmap to stabilize Nigeria's electricity grid and attract fresh investment during his address at the Nigeria Energy Leadership Summit 2026 in Lagos. The summit, themed “Strengthening Power Delivery Through Execution, Coordination and Performance,” took place from 27 to 29 October.
Tegbe emphasized the need to shift focus from designing reforms to delivering measurable improvements in electricity supply and system performance. He identified four cardinal priorities: enhancing energy zones, strengthening sector liquidity, optimizing existing assets, and expanding infrastructure.
The framework aims to address challenges such as gas supply constraints, overstretched transmission infrastructure, and distribution losses. Tegbe also highlighted three priority economic energy corridors: Lagos–Ogun, Benin–Enugu–Port Harcourt, and Abuja–Kaduna–Kano.
Initiatives to reduce losses include the Presidential Metering Initiative, the Distribution Sector Recovery Programme, and the Meter Acquisition Fund. The government has paid ₦1.23 trillion of an estimated ₦3.3 trillion in sector liabilities while blocking financial leakages.
