Nigeria Customs Service Unveils Digital Baggage System

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has launched the Simplified Baggage Import Declaration System at the Seme Area Command, aimed at modernizing border procedures. This system enables passengers to declare personal goods via mobile devices or digital kiosks, replacing manual processes that previously delayed clearance.
The initiative is part of NCS's modernization program, designed to enhance transparency and improve the experience for legitimate travellers and cross-border traders. Under this system, baggage declarations are submitted electronically, with automated calculations for applicable duties, generating receipts upon payment completion.
Tunde Ayagbalo, the command’s Public Relations Officer, reported an average clearance turnaround time of less than five minutes since the rollout, with ₦10.3 million generated from passenger baggage declarations shortly after deployment. The command emphasizes that while the process is simplified, it will be accompanied by stronger enforcement measures to prevent abuse and protect national security.
Abdullahi Kaila, the Area Controller of Seme Command, described this deployment as part of a broader modernization agenda.
