Nigeria Customs Service to Enhance Cargo Clearance with New Tech

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) is set to deploy advanced cargo scanners and an electronic tracking system aimed at reducing port delays, curbing cargo diversion, and enhancing cargo clearance efficiency. These systems are currently undergoing final technical checks in China.
A delegation from the NCS and Trade Modernisation Project Limited (TMPL) conducted a two-week Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) on the Non-Intrusive Inspection (NII) equipment and Electronic Cargo Tracking System (ECTS) at Nuctech Company Limited's facility in China from October 9 to 20, 2026. The test was led by Deputy Comptroller-General Oluyomi Adebakin, who stated that the technology would facilitate legitimate trade, improve revenue collection, and strengthen national security.
The acting comptroller of Non-Intrusive Inspection, Deputy Comptroller Umar Madugu, noted that the new systems would significantly reduce the need for physical cargo examinations. The general manager of TMPL, Bamidele Chinedu, described the FAT as a milestone for the Trade Modernisation Project, emphasizing the importance of integrating these technologies into Customs operations.
