Nigeria Calls for Permanent UN Security Council Seats for Africa

During the 81st UN General Assembly in New York, Vice-President Kashim Shettima delivered a national statement on behalf of President Bola Tinubu, demanding that Africa be allocated at least two permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council, complete with veto powers. Shettima argued that the current structure of the Security Council does not represent contemporary geopolitical realities, undermining the legitimacy of global decision-making.

He reiterated Africa's longstanding position for reform, which includes five non-permanent seats, as outlined in the Ezulwini Consensus and Sirte Declaration. Shettima emphasized that Africa's exclusion from permanent membership is untenable given the continent's significant issues addressed by the Council.

He linked the need for reform to restoring confidence in multilateralism and highlighted Nigeria's commitment to international cooperation and the UN Charter. Shettima also pointed out ongoing conflicts in Sudan and other regions that necessitate urgent diplomatic efforts.
