Shettima Calls for African Representation at UN Security Council

Vice President Kashim Shettima warned the United Nations that Africa will not continue to bear the burdens of the global order without permanent representation on the Security Council. He made this statement during a meeting with UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed at the UN General Assembly (UNGA81).

Shettima emphasized that Africa's exclusion undermines the legitimacy of global governance and reiterated Nigeria's demand for urgent reform of the UN. He commended UN Secretary-General António Guterres for advocating a more representative Security Council, noting that a council without permanent African representation is "unjust and indefensible." Shettima stressed the need for international institutions to be more representative and responsive, reflecting contemporary geopolitical realities.

He also highlighted the importance of addressing human suffering in global decision-making and praised Amina Mohammed for her contributions to multilateral diplomacy. Shettima assured that Nigeria would remain a committed ally in restoring trust among nations and dignity to those affected by hunger, violence, and exclusion.
