Nigeria Secures UN Human Rights Council Seat for 2027-2029
Nigeria has been elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2027–2029 term, receiving 172 votes out of 181 cast during the United Nations General Assembly. Other countries elected include Brazil, Germany, and Japan.
Following this election, Dr Jimoh Ibrahim, Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, congratulated President Bola Tinubu. Membership in the UNHRC enables Nigeria to participate in international human rights deliberations, contribute to decision-making, and promote its national interests through multilateral diplomacy.
The UNHRC is tasked with promoting and protecting human rights globally, addressing violations, and recommending measures to combat abuses. Nigeria's three-year term will allow it to engage with other member states and contribute to strengthening human rights protection worldwide.
