Sanwo-Olu Mourns Legendary Coach Festus Onigbinde

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State expressed deep sorrow over the death of Chief Festus Adegboy Onigbinde, a revered figure in Nigerian football, who passed away at the age of 88. Onigbinde, who led Nigeria's national team, the Super Eagles, during the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Japan and South Korea, was recognized for his significant contributions to the sport.

Sanwo-Olu described Onigbinde as a national icon and a highly respected tactician in Nigerian football history. He guided the Green Eagles to the final of the 1984 Africa Cup of Nations and was the first indigenous coach to lead Nigeria's senior national team to a medal at the tournament, achieving a silver medal in Cote d'Ivoire.

Onigbinde's coaching career began in 1960, and he was known for his dedication to training coaches across Africa. His passing is seen as a profound loss for Nigeria, particularly among football enthusiasts.
