Nigeria Launches Initiative to Enhance Maternal Care

Nigeria has initiated a medical equipment rollout to enhance maternal and newborn care, marking a significant step in reducing maternal and neonatal deaths nationwide. The program aims to target nearly 200,000 interventions per state as part of a comprehensive strategy to drastically lower mortality rates.

Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, and Dr. Muyi Aina, Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), emphasized that this initiative builds upon previous interventions launched six months ago, which enabled 40,000 women to access life-saving healthcare.

Dr. Aina noted that the rollout is not merely ceremonial but part of a broader national effort to strengthen Nigeria's health system through coordinated collaboration among federal, state, and local governments, as well as development partners.

The program will focus on equipping primary health centers and addressing critical areas such as labor rooms, operating theaters, and neonatal units. The initiative drew participation from representatives of the Nigerian Governor Forum and various health development partners.
