Pope Leo to Visit Africa in April 2026 for Major Tour

Pope Leo will embark on his first major overseas trip from April 13-23, 2026, visiting Algeria, Angola, Equatorial Guinea, and Cameroon, as announced by the Vatican. This trip is significant as it underscores the Catholic Church's growth in Africa, where 20% of the world's Catholics reside.

The Pope's visit is expected to draw large crowds and will emphasize the need for global leaders to support the continent's development and highlight efforts in Catholic-Muslim dialogue. The Vatican has indicated that the program details will be published at a later date.

Reverend Agbonkhianmeghe Orob, a Jesuit from Nigeria, noted that this papal tour signifies the Church's prioritization of Africa. The last papal visit to Africa occurred in 2023 by Pope Francis, and prior visits by Pope Benedict XVI and Pope John Paul II were noted for their historical significance.

Algeria, predominantly Muslim, will host the Pope, who is a member of the Augustinian religious order, with a special interest in St. Augustine, a major figure in early Christianity.
