Nigeria Launches Committee for Climate Accountability

The initiative is coordinated by the Federal Ministry of Environment and aims to enhance Nigeria's ability to track and report on climate actions, particularly in line with its obligations under the Paris Agreement.

Halima Bawa Bwari, Director of Forestry at the ministry, described the committee as a strategic mechanism to improve coordination and oversight of climate projects. The committee will provide policy direction to ensure alignment with the Capacity Building Initiative for Transparency (CBIT) program, which supports countries in enhancing their transparency requirements.

The project aims to improve the management and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions across major economic sectors. Bawa Bwari emphasized the importance of collaboration across sectors, including agriculture, forestry, and energy, to achieve meaningful climate commitments.

Other representatives, including Babagana Bukar from the Global Environment Facility and Joseph Onoja from the Nigeria Conservation Foundation, reaffirmed their organizations' commitment to supporting Nigeria in meeting its transparency requirements.
