Stakeholders Urge Stronger Climate Journalism in Nigeria

A call for stronger climate journalism in Nigeria was made during a two-day media training conference organized by the Women Environment Programme (WEP) in Abuja. Michael Simir, Executive Director of Advocacy Campaign Sustain, highlighted the urgent need for public engagement on climate impacts across Nigeria.
He noted that journalists play a central role in shaping public understanding of climate change and environmental governance. The training aimed to deepen media understanding of international frameworks like the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Minamata Convention on Mercury.
Joanna Hannu from the Climate Sustain Development Network (CSDNet) stressed that climate change is a present-day crisis affecting vulnerable communities across Africa. Priscilla Achakpa, founder of WEP, emphasized the media's role in bridging scientific knowledge and public understanding.
Sam Onuigbo, a former member of the House of Representatives, called for investment in climate literacy and investigative reporting to counter misinformation and amplify the voices of vulnerable communities.
