Court Orders Adebiyi's Extradition to UK for Trial

The Federal High Court in Lagos, presided over by Justice Ayokunle Faji, has ordered the extradition of Matthew Chukwuemeka Adebiyi, also known as Matthew Adebiyi, to the United Kingdom to face trial for alleged murder and drug-related offenses. The judgment was delivered on Monday, with the case filed under suit number FHC/L/CS/416/2025.

The Federal Government of Nigeria sought Adebiyi's extradition following a formal request from the UK, which included two criminal complaints related to murder and narcotics offenses. The Attorney General of the Federation, O.

Kupolati, led a team of lawyers in support of the extradition application, asserting that Adebiyi qualifies as a fugitive under Section 21 of the Extradition Act. Adebiyi's counsel, Olanrewaju Ajanaku, opposed the application, arguing it violated his client's fundamental rights and that no valid extradition treaty exists between Nigeria and the UK.

However, the court rejected these arguments, emphasizing that Nigeria must not become a safe haven for fugitives and granting the extradition order.
