Urgent Reform Needed for Nigeria's Healthcare System

During the 5th Oladipo Akinkugb Distinguished Lecture, Professor Thadiu Ijadunola, a professor of community medicine at Obafemi Awolowo University, urged for an urgent overhaul of Nigeria's healthcare system to avert a looming workforce crisis. He warned that the mass migration of healthcare professionals and the retirement of experienced personnel are significantly depleting the sector, which poses a serious threat to national health security and sustainable development.

Ijadunola stressed the necessity for bold policy decisions, sustained investments, and coordinated actions among government and healthcare institutions to manage workforce attrition. He advocated for a multi-pronged strategy that includes enhancing remuneration, improving working conditions, and expanding the primary healthcare workforce.

The lecture, themed "Reimagining the Nigerian Healthcare System: Leadership, Research, and Innovation for the Future," highlighted the importance of adopting innovative technologies and gender-equitable policies to ensure quality and affordable healthcare for all Nigerians.
