Emir Sanusi Urges Nigeria to Embrace AI for Development

During the 8th Biennial Conference of the Committee of Pro-Chancellors of State-Owned Universities in Nigeria held in Kano, the Emir of Kano, Sanusi, called for Nigeria to urgently develop a clear national strategic policy framework to leverage emerging technologies, especially artificial intelligence, for sustainable development. He stressed the importance of proactive planning and urged Nigerian universities to lead the development of a national roadmap for artificial intelligence.

Sanusi noted that the role of academic institutions extends beyond teaching and research, emphasizing their capacity to shape policies that drive national growth in technology. He warned that Nigeria risks being left behind as other countries advance in AI initiatives, citing Ghana as an example of a nation implementing comprehensive strategies focused on youth training and economic transformation.

The conference highlighted the need for sustained collaboration among stakeholders and the importance of innovation in ensuring the relevance and competitiveness of Nigerian universities in the global academic landscape.
