Nigeria's Interior Minister Launches Probe into Detainee Deaths

On September 20, 2026, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, announced a probe into the deaths of 37 detainees who were arrested on suspicion of illegal mining. This decision follows a directive from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident that occurred on September 17, 2026, under the Niger State Command of the Corps.

In light of the investigation, 21 officers, including the Niger State Commandant, have been suspended. The minister described the deaths as deeply disturbing and emphasized the government's obligation to provide a transparent account to the families of the deceased and the public.

A committee has been formed to investigate the identities of the deceased, the circumstances surrounding their arrest, detention, and death, and to recommend appropriate sanctions and preventive measures. The committee, chaired by Mr Jonathan Kure, is tasked with completing its report within two weeks.
