Nigeria's 23 Companies Generate Billions, Ranking Third in Africa

Nigeria is home to 23 companies that generate at least $1 billion in annual revenue, ranking the country third in Africa for the number of such businesses. South Africa leads with 147 companies, followed by Egypt with 33, and Morocco with 20.

The data comes from the McKinsey Global Institute’s African Companies Database, which identified a total of 345 companies across Africa with annual revenues of $1 billion or more. Nigeria's 23 companies represent approximately 7 percent of Africa's billion-dollar corporate group, significantly outpacing its West African neighbors, with Ghana having four, Senegal three, and Côte d’Ivoire two.

The success of these companies is attributed to Nigeria's large consumer market, extensive natural resources, and one of Africa's most developed financial and telecommunications sectors. McKinsey's research indicates that Africa's 345 companies collectively generate over $1 trillion in revenue, with 230 being homegrown and 52 state-owned.
