Nigeria Achieves Record Low in Crude Oil Losses, Credits PIA for Progress

Nigeria has achieved a 16-year low in crude oil losses due to theft and metering errors, with daily losses dropping to the lowest level since 2009. The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission reported a significant reduction in daily crude oil loss to 8,000 barrels per day in July 2025, down from 60,000 barrels per day in January.

This improvement is attributed to the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021, which has enhanced oversight and enforcement in the oil sector. The decline in oil losses signifies progress in stabilizing Nigeria's critical revenue source and reflects the positive impact of regulatory reforms.
