Nigeria's Crude Oil Losses Hit 16-Year Low in July 2025, Thanks to Reforms

Nigeria's crude oil losses hit a 16-year low in July 2025, with daily losses dropping to the lowest level since 2009, according to the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC). The total crude oil loss for the period stood at 3 million barrels, averaging 9,677 barrels per day (bpd), a significant improvement from the previous year.

The NUPRC attributed this progress to reforms under the Petroleum Industry Act of 2021 and enhanced collaboration with security agencies and host communities. The Commission's focus on surveillance, infrastructure protection, and regulatory transparency has contributed to reducing theft and inefficiency in Nigeria's oil sector.
