Zacch Adedeji's Vision for Nigeria's Fair Tax System

Zacch Adedeji, PhD, the Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), has reaffirmed his commitment to establishing a fair and transparent tax system, set to commence on January 1, 2026. This new tax framework prioritizes low-income earners by exempting them from personal income tax and aims to provide significant relief to small businesses by raising the exemption threshold for corporate income tax to companies with an annual turnover of 100 million naira.

Adedeji emphasized the need for a strategic shift in tax policy to ease the pressure on micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) and enable job creation. During a recent leadership retreat in Abuja, he outlined plans to expand the tax net without overburdening compliant taxpayers, leveraging technology to enhance data integration and taxpayer education.

The reforms are aligned with the federal government's broader fiscal objectives to diversify revenue sources and reduce reliance on oil earnings, while also ensuring that taxation serves as a tool for national development rather than a punitive measure.
