Nigeria rolls out digital postcode system for nationwide address identification

The Federal Government has launched a digital postcode initiative assigning unique 11-character codes to buildings across Nigeria to improve service delivery.
Nigeria's Federal Government has activated a new digital address system designed to assign unique identification codes to buildings nationwide. Minister Bosun Tijani, who heads the Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy portfolio, announced the rollout this week, positioning the initiative as a way to simplify how locations are identified and help residents access services more efficiently.
The Nigerian Postal Service operates the system, known as the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System. Each addressable building in the country receives an 11-character digital postcode under the scheme.
The codes are intended to strengthen several service sectors, including last-mile delivery operations, emergency response coordination, government service distribution, and online commerce platforms. By creating a standardized location reference system, the government aims to connect individuals, businesses and communities to opportunities that depend on reliable address identification.
Citizens can locate their assigned postcodes through a dedicated mobile application managed by NIPOST. The process requires users to download the NIPOST Digital Postcode app, select a feature for identifying their postcode, and grant the application access to their device location.
From there, residents can pinpoint their building on an integrated map interface, then copy or store the resulting 11-character code for future use. The system became operational from October 1.
The rollout represents an attempt to address infrastructure gaps in Nigeria's address management. Prior to this system, many areas lacked standardized addressing mechanisms, complicating logistics for delivery services and hampering government efforts to reach populations for public health campaigns and census activities.
The digital postcode approach seeks to create a unified reference point that businesses and government agencies can use to reliably locate and serve customers and citizens across Nigeria's diverse geography and urban-rural landscape.
