Nigeria Enhances Pharmaceutical Sector on World Pharmacists Day

Nigeria is making significant strides in strengthening its pharmaceutical sector, as articulated by Tetshoma Dafeta, the Director of Human Resource Management at the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, during the World Pharmacists Day celebration in Abuja. The reforms are in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aiming to create a resilient healthcare system.

Dafeta emphasized the evolving role of pharmacists beyond traditional medicine dispensing, highlighting their contributions to clinical care and public health. The government plans to enhance pharmacists' involvement in primary healthcare, including community health screening and immunization.

Additionally, there are efforts to bolster local pharmaceutical manufacturing through improved regulatory frameworks and infrastructure incentives under the National Drug Policy. The government is also committed to supporting the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control and the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria in combating counterfeit medical products.

The event gathered various stakeholders, including healthcare organizations and development partners, to reaffirm their commitment to pharmaceutical workforce development and patient care in Nigeria.
