Nigeria Aims for 2026 World Athletics Relays Qualification

Nigeria is targeting a late qualification push for the 2026 World Athletics Relays, with the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) focusing on the women's 4x400m team, which currently holds a vulnerable 23rd position for 24 available spots. The team initially posted a time of 3:31.14 at the Championships Classic in Calabar on March 7.

The qualification window is open until April 5, with significant upcoming events, including a meet at LSU's Bernie Moore Stadium scheduled for April 3-4, where Nigerian athletes based in the U.S. are expected to compete. Additionally, Nigeria will participate in the Lefika International Relays in Gaborone, Botswana, on March 28, facing teams from Poland, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, and the host nation, Botswana.

The 2026 World Athletics Relays will take place at the Botswana National Stadium on May 2-3, marking the first time the event will be held on African soil.
