Nigeria Set to Benefit from EU Methane Regulation

Nigeria is expected to gain from the European Union's new methane regulation on gas imports, which will take effect on January 1, 2027. This law requires gas-exporting countries to meet specific methane intensity standards and submit monitoring reports by 2028.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) has reaffirmed its commitment to the oil and gas decarbonization charter and is a member of the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0. Nigeria LNG (NLNG) has already secured a coveted gold standard for two consecutive years, positioning itself favorably in the European market.

The report indicates that every cubic meter of captured gas represents a monetizable opportunity. The Nigerian government is urged to adopt a defensive diplomatic strategy and a commercial offensive in response to the EU methane regulation, which is increasingly relevant in a climate-conscious global market.
