Nigeria to Enhance Power Supply With $238m Japan Loan for Grid Expansion

Nigeria is set to improve its power supply with a $238 million loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for grid expansion. The loan was discussed at the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9) in Yokohama, Japan, attended by Nigerian officials, including Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu.

The loan, approved by the Federal Executive Council, will fund the construction of new transmission infrastructure, including substations and power lines. Additionally, Nigeria is moving forward with a $190 million renewable energy loan program with JICA to expand distributed solutions in underserved areas.

The goal is to bring clean and dependable power to 17 million Nigerians. The partnership with JICA also includes training programs to enhance the capabilities of distribution engineers and reduce network loss in the power sector.

Additionally, logistics company Kaduna Electric Distribution Company (KEDCO) has signed a memorandum of understanding with JICA for the construction of an energy project incorporating battery energy.
