Nigeria Tops Africa in Cyber-Attacks with 4,701 Weekly Incidents per Organization

Nigeria has emerged as the top African country in cyber-attacks, experiencing 4,701 weekly incidents per organization in January 2026, according to the latest report by Check Point Research. This figure represents a 12-year high and a notable increase from the 4,622 weekly attacks recorded in December 2025.

While Nigeria leads in attack volume, Angola follows closely with 4,512 attacks per organization per week, despite a 7% year-on-year decline. Kenya recorded 2,172 weekly attacks, marking a 41% decrease, while South Africa faced 2,145 weekly attacks, a 36% increase compared to the previous year.

The report highlights that various sectors across Africa, including government, financial services, consumer goods, and industries, are targeted by cyber threats. The rapid adoption of digital technologies, including AI tools, has heightened security risks, particularly in Nigeria's banking, fintech, telecom, and public service sectors.

The report underscores the need for robust cybersecurity frameworks to mitigate the escalating cyber threats faced by organizations in Africa.
