Nigeria's Terrorism Ranking Soars to Fourth in 2025

According to the Global Terrorism Index 2025, Nigeria has been ranked fourth among countries affected by terrorism, a decline from its sixth position in 2024. The report, published by the Institute for Economics and Peace, indicates a staggering increase in terrorist incidents, with 171 recorded in 2025, up from 120 in 2024, and a death toll of 750, marking a 46% increase compared to the previous year.

The report emphasizes that civilians are increasingly targeted, accounting for 67% of the victims, while military forces represent 19%. The rise in terrorist activities is attributed to groups such as the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram, which together are responsible for 80% of terror-related deaths.

Borno State is particularly affected, experiencing 67% of the attacks and 72% of the deaths. The report underscores the ongoing insecurity in Nigeria, exacerbated by the activities of various terrorist groups over the past decade.
