Nigeria Calls for Action Against Afrophobic Attacks in SA

The Nigerian Government has called on South Africa to intensify efforts to combat recurring Afrophobic attacks against Nigerians and other African nationals. This appeal was made by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, during a meeting in Abuja with South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, who visited as a Special Envoy of President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Enikanolaiye stated that President Bola Tinubu directed the meeting to address the persistent attacks and seek lasting solutions. He highlighted the historical relationship between Nigeria and South Africa, particularly Nigeria's role in the anti-apartheid struggle.

Enikanolaiye expressed concern over the violent attacks faced by Nigerians, noting that many victims were lawful residents and that there have been reports of inadequate intervention by security agencies during such incidents. He warned that ongoing attacks could undermine the cooperation between the two nations.

Lamola reaffirmed South Africa's commitment to rejecting xenophobia and thanked Nigeria for its support during South Africa’s liberation struggle.
