Nigerian Consulate Issues Safety Alert After Eight Deaths

The Consulate-General of Nigeria in Johannesburg issued a safety advisory on September 16, 2026, in response to the deaths of eight women in Kempton Park, Rhodesfield, and surrounding areas of Ekurhuleni. These deaths, occurring over approximately two months, are under investigation by the South African Police Service (SAPS), which has deployed a multidisciplinary investigation team.

The consulate noted "concerning similarities" among some cases but clarified that no single perpetrator has been established, nor has the involvement of a serial killer been confirmed. The advisory highlighted the serious nature of the incidents and the broader crime environment in Gauteng Province, where SAPS reported 1,223 murders and 2,369 sexual offences between January and March 2026.

The consulate advised Nigerians, especially women, to avoid exercising alone in isolated areas, travel in groups, and remain alert to their surroundings.
