Nigerian education chief Amos Dangut named WAEC's 14th Registrar

Dr Amos Josiah Dangut assumed the position of Registrar and Chief Executive Officer at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) starting October 1, 2026. This regional examination administration body operates throughout West Africa, and Dangut now leads it as the 14th person to occupy this role.

He replaced Alhaji Pateh Bah from The Gambia. The WAEC international governing board gave its approval to his appointment at the 74th Annual Meeting held during March 2026 in Accra, Ghana.

His five-year term will end in September 2031, having commenced in October 2026. Before stepping into this continental-level responsibility, Dangut managed WAEC's operations in Nigeria from its office in Yaba, Lagos—a role that made him well-known for his work administering West African examinations across Africa's most populous nation.

The announcement became public through Damianus Ojijeogu, who heads Public Affairs operations at WAEC's Accra headquarters. Since joining WAEC in 1998, Dangut has spent more than two decades developing his expertise at the organization.

He has worked in various administrative capacities throughout the examination council, gaining substantial knowledge of examination administration and organizational management. His elevation underscores Nigerian representation in the leadership structures of regional educational governance institutions.

The mandate stretches through September 2031, representing a complete operational cycle under his stewardship. His responsibilities encompass upholding examination standards, charting institutional direction, and supervising day-to-day activities across all West African member nations served by WAEC.
