Insecurity and Distrust Fuel Voter Apathy Ahead of 2027

Security experts, including retired military officer Captain Abdullahi Bakoji Adamu, express deep concern over the rising insecurity and distrust affecting voter turnout in Nigeria as the 2027 general elections approach. Adamu highlights that Nigeria's security architecture is overstretched, facing multiple threats such as insurgency, banditry, and communal conflicts.

He warns that without urgent intervention, the elections may be marred by violence and low voter turnout, eroding public confidence in the democratic process. Adamu stresses the importance of proactive strategies to prevent violence, improve inter-agency collaboration, and engage local communities.

He also notes that political actors must act responsibly to avoid escalating tensions. Zulaiha Danjuma, a Kano-based political activist, adds that many Nigerians have lost faith in elections as a means of change due to unfulfilled promises from past administrations.

She predicts that this voter apathy will significantly affect turnout in the upcoming elections, as citizens feel their votes do not count and their safety is at risk.
