Insecurity Threatens Nigeria's 2027 Elections, Stakeholders Warn

Stakeholders have raised alarms regarding the escalating insecurity in Nigeria, particularly kidnappings and killings, which threaten the integrity of the 2027 general elections. The situation is notably dire in states such as Borno, Katsina, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, and Niger, where communities are left in ruins, facing displacement and loss of livelihoods.

In Kaduna State, for instance, residents experience daily challenges, including abductions and killings for ransom. Notably, in April 2026, 30 worshippers were kidnapped in the Kachia local government area, with five individuals killed and a ransom of N1 billion demanded.

Dr. Samson Abdul, head of the Political Science Department at the University of Abuja, emphasized that without peace, achieving electoral success is impossible.

Mallam Abdulraham Yakubu, a former Kaduna State PDP House Assembly candidate, warned that insecurity could deter voters from participating in elections, as many fear for their lives and properties. The current security personnel are insufficient to ensure free and credible elections, necessitating immediate action to address the rising insecurity before the elections.
