Nigerian Firms Show Mixed Profit Picture in Nine-Month 2026 Results

Listed companies report divergent earnings trends, with banks and investment firms gaining ground while insurers and energy firms face headwinds.
Nigerian companies filing nine-month results for 2026 are painting a mixed picture of corporate health, with some sectors advancing while others retreat. Zenith Bank led banking sector gains by posting N928.8 billion in pre-tax earnings, a marginal 1.24 percent climb from the prior year, even as gross earnings contracted sharply.
Custodian Investment Plc similarly showed strength, with pre-tax profit jumping 25.52 percent to N66.20 billion, underpinned by a 46.92 percent surge in gross revenue. The insurance sector, meanwhile, remains under pressure.
Cornerstone Insurance saw pre-tax profit slip 6.93 percent to N7.74 billion despite pushing insurance revenue up 16.70 percent to N43.31 billion. The gap between rising sales and declining profits suggests mounting cost pressures within the business.
Dangote Sugar Refinery presented a contrasting narrative within the industrial space, swinging from an N8.72 billion loss a year earlier to N78.17 billion in pre-tax profit, achieved through cost controls that outpaced a 9.07 percent revenue decline. Energy giant Oando reported the period's most significant headwind, posting a N74.65 billion pre-tax loss compared with N19.46 billion profit a year prior.
The company's financial costs hit N235.23 billion, crushing earnings despite revenue growing 9.23 percent to N2.78 trillion. The firm salvaged an after-tax profit of N106.45 billion through a substantial N181.10 billion income tax credit.
Across the results, a consistent pattern emerges: companies with control over operating costs are weathering the environment better than those dependent on stable margins or facing elevated financing burdens. Zenith Bank's 70.5 percent reduction in credit impairment charges and Custodian's revenue growth both reflect improved operational management.
Oando's struggle highlights how high debt servicing costs can erode profitability even when underlying business activity strengthens.
