Nigerian Government Launches N50m Fund for Cancer Patients

The Nigerian government has introduced a N50 million Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) fund aimed at supporting cancer patients facing financial and social challenges that impede their access to treatment. Dr.
Iziak Adekunle Salako, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, announced this initiative during its official launch in Abuja. The fund is designed to cover essential non-medical expenses, such as transportation, accommodation, and feeding, which significantly affect patients' access to care.
Despite improvements in cancer care services, many patients continue to experience hardships that delay treatment and worsen health outcomes. The fund's creation follows recommendations from a technical working group responsible for developing the National Cancer Control Plan for 2026-2030.
Salako disclosed that 600 cancer patients have already submitted applications, with 200 successfully completing the verification process. Each verified beneficiary will receive a minimum of N100,000 to help cover essential expenses.
The initiative aligns with the government's commitment to address social and economic factors influencing health outcomes, particularly among vulnerable populations.
