Nigeria Launches Safe Schools Department for Enhanced Security

On [date not specified], Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, announced the creation of a full-fledged Safe Schools Department during an interactive session in Abuja.

This department will provide strategic leadership, coordination, and oversight of school safety programs across Nigeria. It replaces a previous unit with a more robust structure that aligns with the ministry’s constitutional responsibilities.

The initiative aims to strengthen implementation, improve accountability, and enhance monitoring of interventions in all 774 local government areas. Dr.

Alausa emphasized that the renewed Safe Schools Initiative includes not only physical security measures but also infrastructure improvements such as perimeter fencing, solar-powered lighting, and sanitation facilities. The ministry collaborates with various security agencies to develop a comprehensive framework for safer schools.

Dr. Alausa reaffirmed the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration to ensure a secure learning environment for every Nigerian child and thanked the Senate Ad-hoc Committee for their support.
