US Report Critiques Nigeria's Fiscal Transparency Efforts

The United States Government, through the US Department of State, released the 2026 Fiscal Transparency Report on Tuesday, indicating that Nigeria is not making significant progress in fiscal transparency. The report states that Nigeria's budget documents fail to provide sufficient information regarding the country’s revenues and expenditures, particularly lacking a detailed breakdown of spending for executive offices.

While some key fiscal documents are publicly available, they do not offer a comprehensive overview of government finances. The report raises concerns about discrepancies between Nigeria’s approved budget and its actual implementation, criticizing the country’s supreme audit institution for not meeting international standards of independence or publishing substantive reports, despite having access to the entire executed budget.

Additionally, the US government pointed out ongoing transparency challenges in public procurement, emphasizing that actual revenues and expenditures do not align with those in the enacted budget and that accessible information on public procurement contracts is not published.
